When I first started hearing the word autism being said as a possibility for my son I cringed. All of us have an idea of what we think autism is. It can be a kid sitting and flapping his hands. To a kid who is spinning and making noises. It can be the guy on rain man. It could be someone who is "mentally retarded" (I have heard that a lot, I don't use the phrase mentally retarded). We all think we know what autism is and unfortunately it creates a stigma on who these kids are and what challenges these kids face. But most importantly it takes away hope for families and loved ones of children with autism. Take the time today and learn more about autism and the signs and wear blue in honor of those you love with autism. April is autism awareness month so you will see lots of information on autism. Take the time to watch and make yourself more aware. Have a great autism awareness day.
