Our late night rush to the ER

So before anyone reads anything I need to say EVERYONE IS ALRIGHT! So no one should worry anymore but here is what happened. For a while now I have suspected that Bennett has asthma. It seems to flare up when he is really active or when he is sick, mostly teething. A couple of past times we have almost rushed him to the hospital only to have his breathing calm down before we got him in the car. All times were followed up with the pediatrician where I would say I think this kid has asthma and he would hand me a antibiotic and say he thought it was the croup. Which confused me because he was never actually sick all those times. I always gave him the medicine and never say any improvements with it until he would just get better on his own. So Monday all day long I hear his breathing start to get a little wheezy. Dallin was gone hunting all day and I could not get a hold on him. But Bennett seemed to have the breathing problem come and go so I did not worry much. We put him down for bed and he woke up around 8:30 and was wheezing very badly. I called the pediatrician and he told me to get him to the ER. So I drove into Rexburg and got him in the hospital a little after 9. He breathing wasn't too bad when we first got there but because of a more serious emergency and also because we live in a small enough area where there is only one ER doctor on at a time I waited for and hour and a half back in the room with Bennett. Increasingly I heard his breathing becoming more difficult. When the doctor came in the room he did not even have to use the stethoscope to tell me he was having an asthma attack. They did a chest x-ray and saw that his lung were swollen and said he may be getting a secondary infection on top of the asthma which was causing the attack, they gave him a steroid shot and sent me home with a antibiotic. He also received a breathing treatment in the hospital as well as a test for RSV which came out negative. I also left with instructions to call the pediatrician the next day and get Bennett a nebulizer so he could get daily breathing treatments. We got home around 12:30 and Bennett fell asleep pretty shortly after getting home.

The next day I called the doctor and of course they did not believe me that he had asthma and said they needed to see him before they would order a nebulizer. So Dallin takes him in and after the doctor hears him breathing they give him a breathing treatment right there in the office and send us in a mad rush to get a nebulizer before everyone closed for the day.

The moral of the story is for me this was the final straw with my pediatrician. Since we have moved here I have been told he was the best and the only one to see so I have stuck it out as long as I could but he NEVER listens to me. He never believed me about Porter and I had to go around him to get help. He won't help us get Nickelle's feet taken care of and constantly tells me she will grow out of it while day after day she trips over he feet whenever she tries to do anything. Then I have been telling him for months about Bennett's breathing and he just would not listen or take me seriously. Meanwhile I have found a doctor I am really happy with and plan to change all their records to his office ASAP.

I now have a house full of sick kids but I have tried to keep everyone's spirits up. Bennett has to receive a breathing treatment every four hours and still seems to have quite a bit of trouble breathing. I am hoping he will improve soon. I think he will have to do the treatments for awhile now but I will work with the new doctor on a game plan and we will measure it by whether or not he needs them. All in all is it too much to ask that a doctor actually listen when you tell him something is wrong?

Unfortunely more doctors than not are like that, bottom line is you've gotta do what is best for you and your baby. Goes to show "Momma knows best", hang in there, let me know if you would like some recommendation on Peditricians, the clinic I work for works fairly close with some of the peditricians in Idaho Falls. Our email is westlund322@yahoo.com.

Please let me know if you need any info about infants with asthma. Cannon has been on a nebulizer since he was 5 months old. I had the opposite experience--I didn't really think he had asthma at first (he never had an attack, just wheezing), but my pediatrician was convinced. Turned out he was right. My mothering instincts are not as intact as yours! :) I'm glad things are better.

Seas, Lilly Ann told me about Bennett's asthma but man, after reading your story, that is quite the experience! I am glad that things are getting under control. Let me know if you need anything (from a distance)! Hope to see you soon!

My 4-year old nephew has had asthma problems since he was little as well. They started him on a nebulizer pretty early and he has been doing AMAZINGLY well. He rarely has problems anymore. Obviously I can't guarantee the same for Bennett, but I really hope it will help a lot in the long run.
